Karen and her family have been members of Horizon since 1999. She joined the staff of Horizon in the fall of 2003 as the organist. She now serves in multiple capacities as pianist, organist, handbell choir arranger, and children’s choir director. Karen enjoys working in partnership with the Pastor to plan the music for worship services.
Her love of music and passion for the piano began formally at age 5 with her first piano lesson and continues to be a central theme in her life. She graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana earning a Bachelor of Music Plus degree with dual majors in piano performance and mathematics. She was then accepted into the Master of Music program at the University of Illinois specializing in piano pedagogy, and followed that with a Master of Education degree in Secondary Mathematics.
Upon graduation, she taught 7th grade math and accompanied the choirs at an Illinois middle school for 3 years, while her husband worked on completing his doctorate. Over the next 9 years, they lived in 4 different states as his career took off. She remained a stay-at-home mom during those years, raising 3 beautiful and talented daughters. She has always been active in the music programs of her local church: singing in the choir, ringing with the handbell choir, and accompanying or directing a children’s choir. When her family first joined Horizon, she once again joined the adult and bell choirs. She has also helped to start a children’s choir program and filled in on the organ as needed.
One of her favorite quotes, found in a German opera house, is:
Bach gave us God’s word;
Mozart gave us God’s laughter;
Beethoven gave us God’s fire;
God gave us music that we might pray without words.
